Education Changes Lives — And the Data Proves It

The story of one classroom in Solio, and what it teaches us about why education remains the highest-leverage form of aid.

In 2013, we helped rebuild a two-classroom primary school in the Solio settlement in Laikipia County. The building had a leaking roof, three teachers for one hundred and forty children, and a headmistress who had not been paid in four months. The nearest secondary school was fifteen kilometres away, on a road that flooded for six weeks each rainy season.

This year, that school has eight classrooms, two hundred and eighty pupils, a pass rate on the national primary exam of ninety-one percent, and — for the first time — three former pupils who have come back to teach the next generation.

What a Classroom Actually Delivers

It is tempting, in fundraising materials, to reduce education to a slogan. Every extra year of schooling raises a girl's lifetime income by around ten to twenty percent. Universal secondary education would lift more than four hundred million people out of poverty in a single generation. These numbers are true, and they matter.

But sit in a classroom for a morning and you see something the numbers cannot capture: a child discovering that she is not stupid. A boy who had been told to expect nothing from his life realising that he can solve a fraction problem faster than the older cousin who used to mock him. A shy girl standing up to read a paragraph, quietly, and then sitting down while the whole class claps.

Why Buildings Are Not Enough

For a decade, well-meaning aid poured concrete into the ground across sub-Saharan Africa. School buildings multiplied. Enrollment climbed. And in too many places, learning outcomes stayed flat or fell.

We learned, painfully, that a school without a well-supported teacher is a shed with desks. Today, our education program spends more on teacher salaries, training, and mentorship than on construction. We supplement government pay so that qualified teachers stay in remote posts. We run monthly workshops on literacy and numeracy pedagogy. We pair every new teacher with a mentor for their first two years.

The single most cost-effective intervention in a rural classroom is not a new textbook. It is a well-trained teacher who is paid on time and treated with respect.

The Girls Who Nearly Missed It

One of the hardest lessons in our education work is that access is not the same as attendance. A school can be open, free, and welcoming, and girls will still drop out in their thousands — because of menstruation, because of early marriage, because a family has to choose which child gets the fees, because a walk to school is a walk past danger.

Every element of our girls' education program was designed with a girl who had already dropped out once. Sanitary provision. Bicycles for the long walks. Bursaries that go directly to the school. Community conversations, led by mothers and elders, about the value of a daughter's education.

The Numbers That Keep Us Honest

  • 18,400 children currently enrolled across 42 partner schools.
  • 1,240 secondary school scholarships awarded since 2015.
  • 94% of scholarship recipients complete their final year.
  • 63% of our scholarship graduates are the first in their family to finish secondary school.

What Comes After the Classroom

Education is not a moment. It is a chain — and as we explore in our article on sustainable community development, that chain only holds when the whole community owns it. A child who finishes primary school without a secondary place has, in a rural community with few formal jobs, only a marginally better life than one who dropped out at ten. Which is why our projects portfolio now stretches from early childhood centres to vocational apprenticeships.

We are also, quietly, one of the largest employers of young graduates in the areas where we work. Every clinic, every school, every field office is a place where a local young person can build a career at home rather than migrating to Nairobi in search of one.
